Kayla Thornton’s journey from champion to Valkyrie leader – a tale of glory, valor, and heartbreak.
Rising Through the Ranks: A Warrior’s Rise
Kayla Thornton’s basketball journey reads like a hero’s saga.
Undrafted in 2014, she began her career as an underdog, signing with the Washington Mystics only to be waived on the final day of cuts. She returned to the Mystics in 2015, but was released again after just 10 games.
Her breakthrough came in 2017, when she signed with the Dallas Wings. There, she spent six seasons sharpening her craft, battling for every minute on the floor. Though her minutes and starting roles fluctuated, her production never wavered. Her stats tell the story of patience, grit, and perseverance.
In 2023, Thornton was traded to the New York Liberty. A year later, she went from zero starts to earning 11 and became an integral part of the Liberty’s championship run. That season, she averaged just 5.5 points per game, but her presence was felt far beyond the box score.
Then came the expansion draft.

Selected by the Golden State Valkyries, Thornton stepped into a leading role. Over 22 games, she averaged 14 points and 7 rebounds, leading the team in three major statistical categories: points, rebounds, and steals. Her performance made her a frontrunner for the Most Improved Player award.
In her 10th year, the once-role-player had become an All-Star, the first from an expansion team in nearly two decades.
A true warrior. Finally getting her due.
A Tragic Twist: The Fall of the Valkyrie
Just when it seemed this season’s tale could only climb higher, tragedy struck. In a routine practice shortly after the All-Star break where Thornton had shined with 15 points and 11 rebounds as a first-time All-Star reserve – she suffered a severe knee injury. The blow was devastating: Thornton underwent knee surgery and was ruled out for the remainder of the season.
In an instant, the Valkyries lost their leading scorer and guiding voice. The timing was cruel, robbing her of a career year and ruined her opportunity at the Most Improved Player honor she had been contending for. Fans and teammates were heartbroken. Like a fearless Valkyrie warrior slain in battle, Kayla’s magical season came to an abrupt end. What had been a story of triumph and resurgence turned into one of what-ifs – a reminder that even the greatest heroes can fall, and that every legendary season is fragile.
Yet, the legend of Kayla Thornton’s rise remains unsurpassable, and her warrior spirit promises that this tragic ending may one day be just a prelude to another inspiring comeback.
