Fresh off back-to-back EuroBasket championships, Belgian star Emma Meesseman has signed with the New York Liberty with hopes of bringing that same winning energy to the WNBA.
Meesseman made history this summer as the first player ever to win consecutive EuroBasket MVP honors.
Following the announcement, fans wasted no time handing the Liberty a Finals trophy.
Meesseman last played in the WNBA in 2022 with the Chicago Sky, where she averaged 12.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game.
Prior to that, she spent seven seasons with the Washington Mystics, helping lead them to a 2019 championship, and becoming the first reserve to win Finals MVP.
Sources told ESPN that Meesseman also considered signing with the Minnesota Lynx and Phoenix Mercury.
At one point, Minnesota looked like the frontrunner to land Meesseman, especially after the Lynx waived rookie Alissa Pili, a move that many assumed was to free up roster space. With the trade deadline looming on August 7th, there’s still time for other teams to make bold moves. But finding a player with Meesseman’s championship pedigree, international experience, and all-around skill set will be a tough task.
New York has dropped six games this season, struggling at times without Jonquel Jones, who’s been out with a severe ankle injury. Jones is expected to return tonight against the Indiana Fever at 8 PM ET.
Does Emma Meesseman make the Liberty unstoppable?
