No. 22 Returns: Brink Rejoins Sparks for Rival Matchup vs. Vegas

Cameron Brink Returns: 406 Days Later, the Wait Is Over

It’s been 406 days since Cameron Brink last suited up for a basketball game. After tearing her ACL in June 2024 during a matchup against the Connecticut Sun, Brink’s rookie season was cut short just as she was emerging as a defensive force in the league.

In 15 games, Brink averaged 7.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocks on 39.8% shooting. She shot 32.3% from three.

Originally projected to return around the one-year mark, the Sparks opted for a cautious approach. Brink’s return comes as the Los Angeles Sparks are riding a five-game win streak, including an impressive takedown of the No. 2 ranked New York Liberty—on their home court.

A Different Sparks Team Than the One She Left

This isn’t the same Sparks team Brink left over a year ago. With the addition of Kelsey Plum and the improvement of Azurá Stevens they are more versatile, more skilled, and finally meshing offensively.

Before her injury, Brink played in 15 games and was trending toward an All-Defensive Team nod. She was leading the league in blocks, averaging just under 2.5 per game. Now, she returns to a more cohesive team, with Coach Roberts who knows how to maximize hybrid frontcourt talent.

In a lot of ways, Brink mirrors Stevens—both long, mobile, and capable of stretching the floor while holding it down defensively. Right now, she’s expected to provide relief for a short Sparks bench, especially in the frontcourt.

What Does This Mean for the Rotation?

With Brink returning, questions naturally emerge about Emma Cannon’s role. Her minutes have already been trending downward as Sania Feagin continues to blossom. It’s possible the Sparks opt to go younger in the frontcourt, especially with long-term potential in mind. Brink may not play heavy minutes just yet, likely around 15 to ease her back, but her presence will still be felt immediately on defense and in transition.

Sparks vs Aces: A Test on Both Sides

The timing couldn’t be more dramatic. Brink’s first game back is against the Las Vegas Aces, who are fresh off a confidence-boosting win over Dallas. The Wings stunned New York in their last outing despite holding just an 8–19 record, so momentum is swirling across the board.

For the Aces, this game is about defensive focus. While Jackie Young has found her groove facilitating the offense (Vegas wins when she dishes out six or more assists), the real test will be whether they can tighten up their perimeter defense.

In their losses to Indiana, Minnesota, and Seattle, Vegas allowed opponents to shoot 40% or better from three. That could spell trouble against a Sparks team that’s finally hitting its stride.

Keep an Eye On: Jewell Loyd & Kierstan Bell

All eyes are also on Jewell Loyd, now moved to the second unit in hopes of unlocking more consistency. Meanwhile, Kierstan Bell has looked strong in her new starting role after her standout performance in Dallas. It’ll be interesting to see how both adjust under pressure in what’s shaping up to be a growing rivalry.

Welcome Back, No. 22

This is more than just a game, it’s a celebration. It’s been over a year, but Cameron Brink is finally back. Her journey from injury to impact starts tonight in the Staples Center.
